Quick answer: Shopify allows up to 3 options and 2,048 variants per product. To offer more choices, keep stock-tracked choices like size and color as variants, and add the rest with a product options app. Other routes are splitting the product, custom code, or Combined Listings on Shopify Plus.
Key takeaways:
- Stock-tracked choices stay as variants.
- Everything else can be an app option.
- Test new options on mobile.

What Are Shopify’s Product Option and Variant Limits?
Each Shopify product can have up to 3 options and up to 2,048 variants. An option is a choice like Size, Color or Material. A variant is one combination of those choices, such as Large / Blue / Cotton.
| Limit | What Shopify allows |
|---|---|
| Options per product | 3 |
| Variants per product | 2,048 |
| Combined Listings (Plus only) | Up to 3 extra options across up to 60 linked products |

What Is the Difference Between Variants and Product Options?
Variants are real versions of a product with their own price, SKU and stock. Product options added by an app capture extra choices, like a name to engrave, without creating new variants.
| Shopify variants | App product options | |
|---|---|---|
| Limit | 3 options, 2,048 variants | No Shopify option limit |
| Own SKU and inventory | Yes | Usually no (some apps add inventory features) |
| Text, file upload, date picker | No | Yes |
| Extra price for a choice | Yes, per variant | Yes, as an add-on price |
| Show or hide based on choices | No | Yes, with conditional logic |
| Where the choice is saved | The variant on the order | Line item properties on the order |
A simple rule: if you need to count stock for a choice, make it a variant. If you only need to know what the customer picked, make it an option.
Example: a personalized cushion with five choices. The first three need stock tracking; the last two don’t.
| Choice | Values | Set up as | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size | Small, Medium, Large | Variant option 1 | Each size is a different stock item |
| Fabric | Cotton, Linen, Velvet | Variant option 2 | Fabric stock runs out separately |
| Color | Black, White, Blue | Variant option 3 | Needs its own SKU and image |
| Personalization | Engraving or embroidery text | App option (text field) | Unique to each order; nothing to stock |
| Gift wrap | Yes (+$5) or No | App option (checkbox) | A service with a price, not a product version |
That gives 27 variants (3 × 3 × 3) for stock, plus two app options. App options don’t create their own inventory-tracked variants, so stock still lives in the first three.
4 Ways to Add More Than 3 Options to a Shopify Product
1. Split It Into Separate Products
Create one product per main choice, such as “Oak Dining Table” and “Walnut Dining Table”, each with its own 3 options.
Best for: small catalogs with one dominant choice.
Downside: more products to manage, and shoppers must switch pages to compare.
2. Use Combined Listings (Shopify Plus Only)
The Combined Listings app groups separate products into one listing, so they look like one product with up to 3 extra options. It is only available on Shopify Plus and enterprise plans, and free Shopify themes need version 15.0.0 or later (Shopify Help Center).
Best for: Plus stores where each choice needs its own product page, images and stock.
Downside: Plus only, up to 60 products per listing, and still no text fields or file uploads.
3. Add Custom Fields With Theme Code
A developer can add extra inputs to the product form as line item properties. Each field saves the customer’s choice to the order, as long as it is submitted with the product form. Test it through the cart and a real order, and remember it doesn’t replace variants when a choice needs its own stock. Our custom text field guide includes a code example.
Best for: one or two simple extra fields.
Downside: no add-on pricing, no conditional logic without more code, and theme updates can break it.
4. Use a Product Options App
An app adds as many options as you need, in many formats: dropdowns, swatches, text fields, checkboxes and file uploads. Most also handle add-on prices and conditional logic, so you can build complex products without code.
Best for: customizable products, large catalogs and any store needing text, uploads or priced extras.
Downside: a monthly cost on higher plans, and choices are not tracked as stock unless the app supports inventory.
How to Add Unlimited Options With Ultimate Product Options
Install the app, create an option set, add your options, assign it to products, then test on your storefront. Webiots develops Ultimate Product Options, so here is how the setup works in it:
- Install Ultimate Product Options from the Shopify App Store. The free plan includes unlimited option sets and options.
- Create an option set and add your options, for example Fabric (image swatch), Leg Finish (color swatch) and Cushion Fill (dropdown).
- Add prices to any choice that costs more, such as +$40 for velvet. Add-on pricing is included on the free plan.
- Add conditional logic (Basic plan and above) so options appear only when relevant, for example “Monogram text” only after “Add monogram” is ticked.
- Assign the set to one product, a group of products or a collection.
- Test on mobile and desktop: pick every option, add to cart, and check the choices and price in the cart, checkout and order.

Swatches, text fields, file uploads, add-on prices and conditional logic, with no code. Free plan available.
Which Method Should You Use?
| If your product needs… | Use |
|---|---|
| Stock tracked for every combination | Variants (split products or Combined Listings on Plus) |
| Engraving, names or custom text | Product options app or custom code |
| Customer photo or file uploads | Product options app |
Most stores combine them, as in the cushion example above.
Common Problems When Adding More Options
- Options show on the page but not in the order. The field is usually outside the product form. See how to fix product options not showing in the cart.
- Theme update removes the options. Re-add the app block in the theme editor and test again.
- Extra charges missing from the cart. See how to charge extra for product options for how each method shows the charge.
The Bottom Line
Shopify’s 3-option limit is about options, not variants. Keep choices that need their own stock as variants, and add everything else (text, uploads, priced extras, style choices) as product options. If you’re on Shopify Plus, Combined Listings is worth a look; for everyone else, an options app is the quickest way past the limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many options can a Shopify product have?
Three. Each Shopify product can have up to 3 options, such as Size, Color and Material, and up to 2,048 variants.
Can I add more than 3 options on Shopify without an app?
Yes, by splitting products, using Combined Listings on Shopify Plus, or adding custom code. Custom code can capture extra choices, but it won’t add prices or conditional logic without further development.
Do app options count toward the 2,048-variant limit?
No. App options are saved as line item properties, not variants, so they don’t create new variants.
Can app options have their own inventory?
Not by default, because they are not variants. Some apps add inventory features; Ultimate Product Options includes inventory management on its Premium plan.
